New Rules for Do Not Overtake Signs

There is a new legislation change for rear marking plates for transport vehicles that have come into effect this year, starting from Jan 1st 2021. Understanding the new rules around the “Do Not Overtake” signage is important to comply with the safety regulations.

Vehicles with Class 2 reflective plates already fitted will be permitted for use until 31st December 2020, but by 1st January 2021, they must be replaced with the Class 1 plates, Class 400 or UNECE R70 reflective rear marking plates.

From 31st December 2020, fitting of class 2 reflective “Do not overtake” signs is prohibited.

These Signs are as per Australian Standard AS 4001.1 Compliant 

What vehicles MUST be fitted with ‘Do Not Overtake’ signs?

  • Vehicles or combinations 7.5 metres or more in length that have to straddle lanes or turn from an adjacent lane in order to turn left or right at intersections.

What vehicles MAY be fitted with ‘Do Not Overtake’ signs?

  • Any motor vehicle less than 12 tonnes GVM
  • Any trailer less than 10 Tonnes GVM
